Do you agree that:
...Fees for using Public Lands are a DOUBLE TAX on the American people?
...Americans are the OWNERS of Public Lands, not CUSTOMERS of the Forest Service, Park Service or Bureau of Land Management?
...Recreation on Public Lands is not a "product," it is the HERITAGE and BIRTHRIGHT of all Americans?
...Comgress does not have the right to give or sell our Public Lands to corporate interests to COMMERCIALIZE, PRIVATIZE, and PROFIT FROM?
...Access to nature is important to the spiritual and physical well-being of EVERYONE, and no one should be excluded from Public Lands because they can't afford to pay the access fees?
In 1996, Congress authorized the Recreational Fee Demonstration Program (Fee Demo) as a two-year test program in a limited number of sites. Fee Demo was designed by the commercial recreation lobby to market the recreational use of Public Lands. For the first time in American History we are being charged fees for even the simplest and most modest forms of recreation. Recent legislation has extended the fee demonstration through 2004 - eight years of a so-called test program! Worse, Congress has now opened up ALL Public Lands to access and recreational fees.
Americans were able to support these lands through two world wars and the Great Depression. We didn't need Fee Demo then, and we don't need it now.
Send the message to Congress, local officials, and the American public that we will not accept user fees as a way of life for funding the management of our Public Lands. Our Public Lands are a great American heritage worthy of adequate Congressional appropriations. It is a heritage that we are not willing to give up.
