This is a story of my favorite ride...
One day last year in December...yeah thats right in the snow...I was riding my Yamaha Enduro 175, with 3 of my friends: Mike, who was riding his TT-R250, Kenny on his XR250, and Nick on his KLX300.
We started off at my house in Wallace, we rode over to Avery. This is a 32 miles ride...of a single Sheet of ICE. This was back when i wasn't really that good of a rider. I had never really rode on ice before. The temp was about 0 degs that day and we wer bundles up pretty tight. So we started off...
When we hit the top of moon pass...(about 7 miles) we were freezing...we stopped and stuck our hands on our pipes. Ahhhhh that felt so good. When we started down the other side we were commited. when we hit the old rail road bed and into the tunnels we went....now this you think would be better cuz there was no snow in there....wrong... It was horrible the giant chunks of ice from the drips made it impossible to ride through fast...and you couldn't see becuase your eyes wouldn't adjust fast enough. Anyways we made it into Avery all in one piece. There we stopped in at the local bar and had hot bacon cheese burgers and fries...mmmmm they were great.
Well we filled up and jumped back on. we headed back out to the next 32 miles...back up hill. This wasn't so bad untill the top of moon pass again. Kenny was running late for an appointment or something so we decided that since we could only go like 5 MPH anyways it was be quicker to go down into slate creek and down that way...well it would have been if there had been some tracks in the powder that way...
it was fun, we cut trail for about 5-10 miles in fresh powder all you could see behind the other guys were HUGE rooster tails and 4 sets of tracks cutting down this power road. Well everything was going fine until i hit a chunk of ice and dumped the bike down on top of my (previously broken the summer before) knee. I was in pain. but i toughed it out and kept riding. well once we made it back to my house kenny had to take off for his appointment and nick and mike and myself sat around drinking osme hot chocolate warming up for a few hours.
A great day indeed.
Well theres my favorite ride ever...follow suit and tell us yours pls.

I filed your adventure where it belonged. Warming your hands on your muffler reminds me of an adventure of mine. I will have to share it soon. But give me some time to write it up.

Brent, I was reading your story again. I have a question. You said that you ate a cheeseburger and tanked up. I didn't know that Avery has these accommodations. I thought Avery was just an oversized FS camp. So if we took a trip to Avery, we can eat, fill up our tanks and go from there?

Avery has a alot of stuff, bar/resturaunt, gas, deisel, motel. few houses, even has a school. Actually Avery's school is like in the top 10 for best vocation department in the state...go figure...
But yeah, lots of stuff. has the old depot from the milwalkee over there that has some really cool stuff. Have a fish pond with HUGE rainbow trout. Its a fun place to visit.

Cool, I would like us to plan a ride to there. We can start at Wallace ride to Avery, ride around the trails there, spend the night and ride back to Wallace the next day. What do you think?

That sounds like a great plan. If i was going to do it i would ride from wallace to avery on the main road/rail road grade. Then i would ride down to the ranger station, and go up slate creek. Anyone who has never been up slate creek will be amazed at its beauty. Then from slate creek back to wallace. Round trip would be...hmmm id have to say from 70-80 miles. But well worth the mileage. Ill make the ride one day this summer to get the actual milliage or see what i can dig up for maps.
If you plan to camp...bring your fishing pole, good fishing

Hey xena, i was thinking about the ride to avery listed above. You think we should plan a ride for it? even if its just you and I, I would still be happy as long as i had someone to ride with.
I think we should plan one.
I think another place that is awesome to go is loop creek. If we were gonna ride there id say we should camp up loop creek, there is some very nice camp sites in there,
If you wanted to do the round trip back through slate creek, there is a very beautiful FS camp ground about 17 miles give or take a few from Wallace on that road that is just goeurgous.

Wow, Brent that all sounds fun. Will you plan some rides for the Joe for this next season? We try to plan easy club rides so everyone in the group can go ride. That does not mean the experienced riders have to ride the same route or with the same group. Usually there are two groups of riders within a planned club ride: one for the beginners and one for the experienced. Of coarse rides are very flexable. It all depends on who shows up to ride and how everyone wants to ride. Remember it is all in fun. Nothing is chiselled in stone.

Yeah, ive been throwing some ideas around lately alot. I have a few sketched down on paper that i was thinking would be fun. Im trying to work out alternate routes. The avery loop is alot of road riding, but when you camp out you can go anywhere, from the loop creek area you can go into the shefoot mountains, those look cooooool. I can also arange to have fuel hauled into loop creek. Would be no hassle at all since the guys have to drive through it everyday to work. The only thing about the avery/slate creek loop is that there is a bunch of road riding to do(as previously stated) But i personally would rather ride that loop than about anywhere i have ever been, it is that impressive. what would be a good date to plan a ride? or is that sorta my choice?
Since i live in town and at the very bottom of moon pass (the road we would take) it would be okay to leave rigs there so you dont have to worry about break in etc for over nite rides/campouts unless you wanted to camp with your rig. Up to you, easy access to either camp area. Loop creek camp ground is easily accessed with vehicles with very low ground clearance. The roads in there are very nice and are well maintained. The FS campground at slatemeadows, up slate creek, is not so easily accessed. you need a 4X4 SUV or pickup to get into that. There are 2 trails that take off from that area, ive never ventured up either but i hear they aren't for the faint hearted. Might be a good ride for the more advanced riders.

Everything you have said sounds great to me. I am ready to go right now. ;D ;D ;D ;D You set the dates. There are rides already setup so try to avoid conflict with them. They are posted on the calendar in the header at the top of this page. You can only view the calendar pages to see what dates the rides are. From there you need to go to the topic thread for "Rides/Campout" and post your rides there.

OK you guys I don't do the real hard tech stuff very well. I fall down a lot and cuss like a drunken sailor when I do. You had better make sure I can get there or I'm gonna take my truck and go home! So there

hahaha, the ride i have planned consists of mostly roads. Even if you dont like road riding...this is one to go on, i promise you, you will like it. You get to go through train tunnels, over trian trestles, stop for go go juice at a lil restraunt/tavern that is very rustic. one of the camps is only about 12 miles from avery (if we choose to stay there) and right in the heart of a very fun and exciting trail system. I remember meeting teo specific people on the route of the hiawatha (you know who you are) (i was at work) we could ride all throughout that area (very easy rides) this includes shefoot, stateline road (more difficult). I could show you the old mines that are up there, there are a few trails that ive never ventured up that have seriously sparked my intrest, from hearing of the past i guess there are old buildings and such up in these places that i would like to see. I just never get the chance to do it. All of this would be accomplished day one or early day two. Day two afternoon we would head to avery, fill up everyone's bikes with fuel and go into slate creek. This is a very beautiful ride (nice and easy). We would go up over slate sattle and down into moon pass again, and into wallace. There are also trails along the way here too that are fun not to mention there are some KILLER hill climps along all these roads that are cool to see to see crazy people go up. I havnt decided the date yet, but im praying for nice weather already, i dont mind riding in the rain, i just dont like camping in it.
